Legacy of Experience in Service of Impact

Executive Service Corps (ESC) was founded on a simple but powerful idea: seasoned leaders hold a wealth of knowledge that can transform organizations and strengthen communities when shared in service of others.

That idea took shape in 1964, when David Rockefeller and a group of civic leaders launched the International Executive Service Corps (IESC). Announced by Lyndon B. Johnson, the initiative mobilized retired American executives to provide technical and managerial expertise to businesses and institutions in developing countries—an early model of skills-based volunteerism with global reach.

Bringing the Model Home

By 1977, the success of this approach abroad inspired a new vision domestically: applying the same high-level expertise to challenges within the United States. The National Executive Service Corps (NESC) was established to bring seasoned business leaders into partnership with nonprofits and government agencies.

Our mission was clear and ambitious: strengthen organizations that serve the public good by equipping them with the strategic insight, operational rigor, and leadership guidance typically reserved for the private sector.

A Movement Takes Shape

Throughout the 1980s, the model gained traction nationwide. Independent ESC organizations emerged in communities across the country, each adapting the approach to local needs while remaining united by a shared purpose.

Our affiliates expanded the scope of impact beyond consulting engagements—supporting workforce development initiatives, mentoring students in critical subjects like math and science, and helping organizations navigate growth and change with greater confidence.

What began as a single idea evolved into a dynamic, community-embedded movement powered by experience, purpose, and collaboration.

ESC Today

Today, ESC operates as a network of independent affiliates across the United States, connected through Executive Service Corps-United States (ESC-US).

Together, ESC organizations deliver high-impact services, including:

  • Strategic consulting
  • Executive coaching
  • Leadership development
  • Board and organizational advisory

Each ESC is deeply rooted in its local community, while contributing to a broader national mission: strengthening the organizations that strengthen our society.

Meanwhile, the original global initiative continues its work today as Improving Economies for Stronger Communities (IESC), carrying forward the founding vision on an international scale.
