More Than 60 Years of Experience in Service
For decades, Executive Service Corps organizations have connected experienced business and community leaders with nonprofits and public-serving organizations to strengthen communities through strategic expertise, leadership, and service.
1964: The Beginning
The model began in 1964 with the creation of the International Executive Service Corps (IESC), launched by David Rockefeller and announced by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
The initiative mobilized retired American executives to provide technical and managerial expertise to organizations in developing countries—an early example of skills-based volunteerism at scale.
1977: Bringing the Model to the United States
The success of the international effort inspired the creation of the National Executive Service Corps (NESC), applying the same expertise-driven model to nonprofits and public-serving organizations across the United States.
ESC organizations helped mission-driven organizations strengthen strategy, operations, leadership, and long-term sustainability.
1980s: A National Network Emerges
Throughout the 1980s, independent ESC affiliates formed in communities nationwide, adapting the model to local needs while sharing a common mission of community impact through service.
In addition to consulting and advisory services, ESC affiliates supported workforce development, leadership mentoring, and organizational growth initiatives.
